Preventing Vector Borne Diseases around the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions by creating new networks.


The overall objective of the EU-funded MediLabSecure project is to increase, through capacity building, the health security in the Mediterranean Area and Black Sea Region. In particular, it aims at enhancing the preparedness to common health threats and biosafety risks at national and regional levels by the creation of a Network of laboratories involved in human and animal virology as well as medical entomology.

Project duration: 4 years (2014-2017)

  • Create a framework for collaboration to improve integrated surveillance (animal, human, entomological) and monitoring of emerging vector borne and respiratory viral diseases
  • Provide training for capacity building in laboratories and transfer of biosafety and best laboratory practices
  • Provide training for public health experts in participating countries to increase the communicable disease control
  • Provide recommendations to improve integrated surveillance

Scope: vector-borne diseases, arbovirus, zoonotic virus, mosquito vectors

Priority diseases: West Nile Fever, Rift Valley Fever, Dengue, Chikingunya, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever

Networking and Capacity building


  • Tailored training in diagnosis of vector-borne and emerging respiratory viruses (including West Nile, Rift Valley Fever...) from human and animal samples
  • Training in biosafety  and biorisk management
  • Tailored training in medical entomology: workshops for systematic identification of vectors of relevant arboviruses


EQA & Expert visits

  • External Quality Assessments (EQAs): feedback on diagnostic performance, harmonization and validation of techniques
  • Onsite Expert visits to laboratories upon request by the participating countries


Improve monitoring of vectors

  • Develop an electronic determination key of mosquito species
  • Propose adapted measures for surveillance and control of vectors
