MediLabSecure: One health network for preparedness and response to viral threats in the Mediterranean, Black Sea and Sahel regions


The EU-funded MediLabSecure project (2014-2021) aims at enhancing the preparedness and response to viral threats by establishing and consolidating an integrated network of human and animal virologists, entomologists and epidemiologists. The project encompass in 22 non-EU countries of the Mediterranean, Black Sea and Sahel areas. It is set up and coordinated by 6 partner institutes in 4 European countries. 

Through active networking, training and expertise exchange, the main tasks are to implement and maintain the laboratories capacities for detection, diagnostics and surveillance of arboviral diseases ; implement and maintain the biosafety, biorisk managamement and laboratory good practices ; promote networking and develop an integrated surveillance approach in the region.

Developped by IRD and Institut Pasteur, this video explains the essential role that medical entomology plays in the accurate identification of insect vectors of infectious diseases and therefore the assessment of their risk for human population. Medical entomology is one of the four components of the European project MediLabSecure which aims to increase health security in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions through a One Health approach.
