The MIVEGEC studies selective and adaptive processes determining the interactions between invertebrate or vertebrate hosts and their pathogens. Different approaches are used, and these include;

  • identifying genes involved in host-pathogen interactions and analysing the parameters determining their frequency, distribution, and diversity,
  • genome-by-genome interactions,
  • the role of co-infections.

The main questions addressed concern, in particular, the factors determining vector competence in natural systems (vector immunity, the role of saliva in transmission and host immune response) and how pathogens manipulate their hosts so as to increase their transmission success.

These studies involve fieldwork in natural settings and testing hypotheses in laboratory experiments using several different systems, including;

  • Plasmodium spp. of primates and birds
  • the dengue and Chikungunya viruses
  • Leishmania
  • Trypanosomes
  • tick-borne pathogens (Borrelia and Babesia)
  • flu virses
  • tuberculosis
